Recording a walk

Record a walk

Updated 23 Oct 2026

  1. Step 1: Open Walk Now

Put the tracker on your dog and keep it close to your phone, so it connects over Bluetooth. Then go to the Walk tab and tap Walk Now.

  2. Step 2: Tap the play button

The walk starts straight away. If the tracker isn’t connected, the app asks whether to start without it. You’ll still get the time, distance and route, but no steps or calories unless the tracker connects during the walk.

The app asks to change location permission?

Choose Always. The app needs it to keep recording the walk while your phone is locked.

  3. Step 3: Walk, pause and log as you go

The map shows your route, with Duration, Distance and Steps along the bottom. Tap pause for a break and play to carry on. Tap the poop icon to log poop and wee.

  4. Step 4: Tap stop when you’re done

Tap the square stop button, then Stop Walk to confirm.

  5. Step 5: Check the summary and save

You’ll see the time, distance, steps, calories and route. Tap the pencil to rename the walk, then tap Save walk. To throw the walk away instead, tap the X.

Frequently asked questions

My walk won’t start, has no steps or won’t save. What should I check?

End Live mode first, allow location Always with Precise Location on, and connect the tracker before you start, so steps are counted. On the summary, tap Save walk, not the X, which deletes the walk. “Fix walk recording problems”, under Troubleshooting, goes through each step.

Does the tracker start a walk by itself?

No. A walk only starts when you tap the play button, on the Walk tab or on the walk card on Home. Put the tracker on your dog and keep your phone close before you start, so the two connect over Bluetooth and steps are counted from the start.

Can I record a walk without the tracker?

Yes. If the tracker isn’t connected when you tap play, the app asks whether to start without it. Your phone still records the time, distance and route, but there are no steps or calories unless the tracker connects during the walk, because those come from the tracker.

Why does the app need location set to Always?

Your phone’s GPS draws the route, so the app needs your location for the whole walk. Set to Always, it keeps recording while your phone is locked in your pocket or you’re using another app. If it’s set to anything else, the app asks you to change it when you start a walk.

Can I use Live mode during a walk?

No. Walks and Live mode can’t run at the same time. If you need to find your dog mid-walk, stop the walk first, then tap Live on the Location tab.

What happens when I pause a walk?

The timer stops and the tracker stops counting steps until you tap play again. The route on the map marks where you paused and where you carried on.

How do I log poop and wee?

During a walk, tap the poop icon on the map, use + and − to set the counts, then tap Save. They appear in the walk’s summary. If you got them wrong, you can correct them later by editing the walk.

What happens if the app closes during a walk?

The walk is stored on your phone as you go, so it isn’t lost. Next time you open the app, it takes you to the walk’s summary, where you can save it or throw it away.

Why wasn’t my walk kept?

A walk that covered no distance is discarded when you stop it. This can happen if your phone couldn’t get a GPS signal. Saving also needs an internet connection: if it fails, try Save walk again once you’re back online.
