At a glance
A walk is something you record in the app: tap play as you head out and stop when you’re back. Your phone draws the route, the tracker counts your dog’s steps, and together they give you the time, distance, steps and calories for every walk.
Saved walks build up a history, so you can see how active your dog has been week by week and month by month.
How a walk is recorded
A walk is recorded on your phone and saved to your account when you finish. Each number comes from a different place.
If the tracker isn’t connected, you can still record a walk. You’ll get the time, distance and route, but no steps or calories unless the tracker connects during the walk.
- Route and distance
- Your phone’s GPS, so take your phone with you. For dogs, distance is worked out from their steps and shoulder height when the tracker is connected.
- Steps
- The tracker’s motion sensor, sent to your phone over Bluetooth.
- Time
- The app’s timer. It stops while the walk is paused.
- Calories
- Worked out from your dog’s steps and the weight in their profile.
What you see during a walk
Once a walk starts, the app shows a map with your route drawn as you go.
On the screen
- Duration, Distance, Steps
- Running totals along the bottom of the screen.
- Pause and play
- Pause for a break, play to carry on. The route marks where you stopped and started again.
- Stop
- The square button. Confirm with Stop Walk to end the walk.
- Poop icon
- Log poop and wee with + and −, then tap Save.
The walk summary
When you stop, the app shows the walk’s summary. Nothing is saved until you tap Save walk.
On the screen
- Totals
- Time, distance, steps and calories. Walks recorded without the tracker connected show no steps or calories.
- Average Pace
- Your average speed over the walk, in kilometres per hour.
- Route
- The path you took, on a map.
- Pencil, Save walk, X
- Rename the walk, save it to your history, or throw it away.
Stats & History
Every saved walk is kept under Stats & History on the Walk tab. Switch between Weekly and Monthly to change the period, and tap any walk to open its summary.
On the screen
- Best
- Your dog’s longest walk by distance.
- Average
- Their typical distance, time, calories and steps per walk.
- Manual walks
- Walks you added by hand. They have no route, because they weren’t recorded.
Different situations

- The app asks whether to start without it. You’ll get the time, distance and route, but no steps or calories unless the tracker connects during the walk.
- The tracker disconnects during a walk
- Steps taken while it’s disconnected aren’t counted. The time and route carry on from your phone.
- The app closes during a walk
- The walk is kept on your phone. Next time you open the app, it takes you to the summary.
- Your phone had no GPS signal
- A walk that covered no distance is discarded when you stop it.
- You’re offline when you save
- Saving needs an internet connection. Try Save walk again once you’re back online.
- You need Live mode mid-walk
- Stop the walk first: walks and Live mode can’t run together.
- You forgot to record a walk
- Add it by hand from Stats & History.

Frequently asked questions
Recording a walk
My walk won’t start, has no steps or won’t save. What should I check?
End Live mode first, allow location Always with Precise Location on, and connect the tracker before you start, so steps are counted. On the summary, tap Save walk, not the X, which deletes the walk. “Fix walk recording problems”, under Troubleshooting, goes through each step.
Does the tracker start a walk by itself?
No. A walk only starts when you tap the play button, on the Walk tab or on the walk card on Home. Put the tracker on your dog and keep your phone close before you start, so the two connect over Bluetooth and steps are counted from the start.
Can I record a walk without the tracker?
Yes. If the tracker isn’t connected when you tap play, the app asks whether to start without it. Your phone still records the time, distance and route, but there are no steps or calories unless the tracker connects during the walk, because those come from the tracker.
Why does the app need location set to Always?
Your phone’s GPS draws the route, so the app needs your location for the whole walk. Set to Always, it keeps recording while your phone is locked in your pocket or you’re using another app. If it’s set to anything else, the app asks you to change it when you start a walk.
Can I use Live mode during a walk?
No. Walks and Live mode can’t run at the same time. If you need to find your dog mid-walk, stop the walk first, then tap Live on the Location tab.
What happens when I pause a walk?
The timer stops and the tracker stops counting steps until you tap play again. The route on the map marks where you paused and where you carried on.
How do I log poop and wee?
During a walk, tap the poop icon on the map, use + and − to set the counts, then tap Save. They appear in the walk’s summary. If you got them wrong, you can correct them later by editing the walk.
What happens if the app closes during a walk?
The walk is stored on your phone as you go, so it isn’t lost. Next time you open the app, it takes you to the walk’s summary, where you can save it or throw it away.
Why wasn’t my walk kept?
A walk that covered no distance is discarded when you stop it. This can happen if your phone couldn’t get a GPS signal. Saving also needs an internet connection: if it fails, try Save walk again once you’re back online.
Steps, distance and calories
How does Waggi count steps?
The tracker’s motion sensor counts your dog’s steps and sends them to your phone over Bluetooth during the walk. Keep the tracker connected and your phone nearby: steps taken while it’s disconnected aren’t counted. Steps also stop while a walk is paused.
Does the walk route come from the tracker?
No. Your phone’s GPS draws the route during a walk, so take your phone with you. The tracker’s job during a walk is counting steps.
How is distance measured?
For dogs, when the tracker is connected, distance is worked out from their steps and the shoulder height in their profile, so keep that height accurate. Otherwise it’s measured along the route by your phone’s GPS.
What does Average Pace show?
Your average speed over the whole walk, in kilometres per hour. A higher number means a brisker walk.
How are calories worked out?
From your dog’s steps and the weight in their profile. A heavier dog burns more for the same number of steps, so update the weight when it changes. Walks recorded without the tracker connected have no steps, so they show no calories.
Your walk history
Where are my past walks?
On the Walk tab, tap Stats & History. Switch between Weekly and Monthly to change the period, and tap any walk to open its summary with its route, steps and calories.
What do Best and Average show?
Best is your dog’s longest walk by distance. Average is their typical distance, time, calories and steps per walk. Both update as you save new walks.
Does changing a walk’s distance update its steps and calories?
No. Steps and calories stay as they were recorded, because they come from the tracker. You can still correct the name, date, distance, time and poop and wee counts.
