Home Wi-Fi.

Adding your home Wi-Fi to the tracker, and changing it later.

At a glance

You can save your home Wi-Fi in the Waggi app, during setup or later in Settings. It’s optional, and the tracker works the same without it.

For now, saving it gets the tracker ready for a future update. To save battery while your dog is at home, put a virtual fence round your home.

What it’s for

The tracker stays in touch through its own mobile connection, and with your phone over Bluetooth. It doesn’t join your Wi-Fi today, and adding your home Wi-Fi doesn’t change how it works yet: more is coming in a future update.

The app says the tracker saves battery on your home Wi-Fi. That isn’t switched on yet. What does save battery at home is a virtual fence round your home: while your dog is inside it, the tracker can rest its mobile connection. See Virtual fences and Battery and charging.

Add your home Wi-Fi

You can add it on the Permission screen while you set up the app, or any time later. You don’t need the tracker nearby, or connected over Bluetooth.

Open Home Wi-Fi
During setup, tap Home Wi-Fi on the Permission screen. Later, go to Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi.
Check the Wi-Fi name
The app fills in the Wi-Fi your phone is on, if your phone lets it. Otherwise, type your home Wi-Fi’s name exactly as it appears in your phone’s Wi-Fi settings.
Enter the password
Type your Wi-Fi password. The app doesn’t check it, so take care with capitals.
Place the pin
Under “Where is this Wi-Fi?”, move the map so the pin sits on your home.
Tap Save
Save works once the name and password are filled in and the map has loaded. On the Permission screen, Home Wi-Fi then shows a tick.

Good to know

2.4 GHz only
The tracker works with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. If your router shows separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, use the 2.4 GHz one.
One network
You can save one home Wi-Fi. Saving another replaces it.
A password
You can only save a Wi-Fi that has a password.
No Bluetooth needed
The app sends it to your tracker over the internet. If your phone is offline, it goes as soon as the app is back online. Added before pairing? It goes once the tracker is paired.
Kept for your tracker
If you reinstall the app or move to a new phone, your home Wi-Fi comes back once you’ve signed in and the app has connected. Logging out removes it from that phone only; it comes back when you sign in again.

Different situations

You change your Wi-Fi password
Go to Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi, type the new password and tap Save. Nothing stops working in the meantime, because the tracker doesn’t use your home Wi-Fi yet.
You get a new router or move house
Go to Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi, change the name and password, move the pin to your new home and tap Save. Move your home virtual fence too.
You want to remove it
There’s no way to remove it in the app yet. It does no harm saved, and you can change it any time.
Save stays greyed out
Fill in both the Wi-Fi name and password, and wait for the map to load. A Wi-Fi without a password can’t be saved.
Home Wi-Fi has no tick on a new phone
It comes back once you’re signed in and the app has connected. You can also add it again, there or in Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions

Adding your home Wi-Fi
How do I add my home Wi-Fi?

Go to Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi, or tap Home Wi-Fi on the Permission screen during setup. Check the Wi-Fi name, enter the password, move the map so the pin sits on your home, then tap Save.

Do I have to add my home Wi-Fi?

No, it’s optional, and the tracker works the same without it. For now, adding it gets the tracker ready for a future update.

Does it work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. The tracker works with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. If your router shows separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, save the 2.4 GHz one. Not sure? Your router’s label or settings page usually says.

Does the tracker need to be nearby, or connected over Bluetooth?

No. The app sends your home Wi-Fi to the tracker over the internet, so it doesn’t need to be nearby. If your phone is offline, it goes as soon as the app is back online.

My home Wi-Fi won’t save. What’s wrong?

Save stays greyed out until both the Wi-Fi name and password are filled in and the map has loaded, and a Wi-Fi without a password can’t be saved. The tracker also works with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only: if your router shows separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, enter the 2.4 GHz one.

Can I add it before pairing the tracker?

Yes. Tap Home Wi-Fi on the Permission screen and save it. It goes to the tracker once the tracker is paired.

Changing it
How do I change my home Wi-Fi or its password?

Go to Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi. The name, password and pin are filled in with what you saved. Change what you need and tap Save. Saving a different Wi-Fi replaces the old one.

What happens if my Wi-Fi password changes?

Nothing stops working, because the tracker doesn’t use your home Wi-Fi yet. Update the password in Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi, so it’s right for later.

Can I remove my home Wi-Fi?

Not in the app yet. It does no harm saved, and you can change it at any time in Settings, then Tracker Settings, then Home Wi-Fi.

Do I need to add it again on a new phone?

No. Once you’ve signed in on the new phone and the app has connected, it picks up the home Wi-Fi your tracker already has. If you add one on the new phone, that one replaces it.

Wi-Fi and battery
Does adding my home Wi-Fi save battery?

Not yet. The tracker doesn’t use your home Wi-Fi today, even though the app mentions saving battery. To save battery while your dog is at home, put a virtual fence round your home: while they’re inside it, the tracker can rest its mobile connection.

Is the tracker connected to my Wi-Fi?

No. The tracker uses its own mobile connection, and talks to your phone over Bluetooth. Saving your home Wi-Fi doesn’t connect it yet.

Does it help the tracker find my dog?

Not your saved Wi-Fi. The tracker can use the Wi-Fi networks around it to help work out where it is, without needing any password, whether or not you add your home Wi-Fi.
