At a glance
Everything you see about your dog starts with a few sources: the tracker’s motion sensor and location, your phone on the walks you record, and the profile you fill in.
Waggi turns those readings into the information in the app: steps, calories, sleep and walks today, and soon eating, drinking, licking and scratching too.
Where it comes from
The tracker’s sensors take the readings. Metrics are worked out on the tracker or in the Waggi cloud, stored in the cloud, and shown in the app, along with what you add there.

From movement to meaning
Walking and running have a steady rhythm, and rest and sleep are quiet. Waggi reads the rhythm and the amount of movement in the motion sensor’s readings, and turns them into steps, activity, rest and sleep.

One sensor, one line of readings: each thing your dog does leaves its own pattern. Eat, drink, lick and scratch are coming soon.
- 1SenseThe tracker’s motion sensor records how your dog moves, all day and night.
- 2SendReadings travel to the Waggi cloud over the tracker’s own mobile connection.
- 3RecogniseOn the tracker or in the cloud, each pattern of movement is turned into steps, activity, rest and sleep. Eating, drinking, licking and scratching are coming soon.
- 4Sum upThe cloud adds it up with your dog’s profile into daily totals, compares each day with their usual, stores it, and shows it in the app.
What you see
The result is your dog’s day: long stretches of activity, rest and sleep, the moments in between, and how today compares with their usual.

Scratching is up 30% this week. Mostly in the afternoon. If it keeps up, it may be worth a check for fleas or a skin irritation.Coming soon
Frequently asked questions
Activity and sleep
How does the tracker count steps?
Its motion sensor feels every movement your dog makes. A step has its own pattern of movement, and the tracker picks out that pattern in the sensor’s readings and counts it, all day, on walks and off them.
Where is my dog’s data stored?
The tracker works out your dog’s steps, calories and activity itself, then sends them over its own mobile connection to the Waggi cloud. They’re stored there with your account, and the app shows them from there. On a walk you record, the tracker also sends its steps to your phone over Bluetooth.
How often does the app get new data?
Each time the tracker checks in, which it does regularly through the day, so today’s numbers can be a little behind what your dog has just done. If it can’t connect, for example with no mobile coverage, it keeps its readings and sends them once it’s back in range. Readings it hasn’t sent yet are lost if it switches off or its battery runs out first.
How accurate is step counting?
It’s a good estimate, not an exact count. The tracker counts steps once your dog moves with a steady stride, so lying still, car rides, shaking and scratching aren’t counted as steps. A loose collar can hide some walking, and the tracker uses your dog’s weight to recognise their stride, so keep the fit snug and their weight up to date on the Profile tab.
How does Waggi tell activity, rest and sleep apart?
From how much the tracker moves. Steady movement is activity, small movements like shifting or grooming are rest, and lying very still is sleep. It can’t tell whether your dog’s eyes are closed, so a dog lying awake and very still can count as sleep.
What happens on days the tracker isn’t worn or is charging?
Waggi only knows what the tracker feels while your dog wears it. No steps are counted for those hours, and a tracker lying still, on its charger or a table, can look like a dog asleep, so that time may show as rest or sleep. For the best time to charge it, see Health.
Who can see my dog’s data?
In the app, only you, signed in to your Waggi account. Sharing with friends and family isn’t available yet: it shows Coming soon in Settings. For how Waggi looks after your data, see the Privacy Policy in the app, under Settings, then Help.
How much sleep is normal for a dog?
Most adult dogs sleep 12 to 14 hours a day, and puppies and older dogs more. What matters most is a change from your dog’s usual.
